Food Sources of Antioxidants
I bet you’ve heard all about antioxidants – in the paper, over the radio, on TV, and on the internet – they’re all over the place!
But what are antioxidants anyways?
According to the ever-informative Wikipedia, an antioxidant is a “molecule capable of slowing or preventing the oxidation of other molecules. Oxidation is a chemical reaction that transfers electrons from a substance to an oxidizing agent. Oxidation reactions can produce free radicals, which start chain reactions that damage cells.”
This translates to aging and the onset of serious medical illnesses such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis as well as degenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease.
Where can you obtain antioxidants?
Believe it or not, a trip to your local grocery store will give you a wide selection of food items which are excellent sources of antioxidants. Check out the list below! Make sure to include them in your shopping list and load up your shopping cart with these very healthy stuff.

4. flaxseed
5. Brussels sprouts
6. oatmeal
7. sweet potatoes
8. carrots

Most of these fruits and vegetables are called superfoods because they are excellent sources of nutrients – vitamins and minerals, fiber, and antioxidants.

Tomatoes are members of a special group of fruits and vegetables called superfoods.
What are these superfoods?
Superfoods are food items which have amazing nutritional properties – excellent sources of vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber, phytonutrients, and antioxidants.
So how did tomatoes become a member of the superfoods?
The answer – lycopene.
You’ve probably heard this, seen it on TV and read it somewhere.
Lycopene is a potent antioxidant which is supported by many studies on its many health benefits. One study has found that a diet high in lycopene lowers the risk of prostate cancer by as much as 35%.
According to Tara Miller, an NYU nutritionist, there has been research that shows “lycopene may protect against breast cancer . . . annd it’s also a powerful antioxidant that can help a woman fight heart disease.”
It can also reduce the risks of cardiovascular disease and it may also protect against UV damage. And to those calorie-conscious people, a tomato has very few calories, just 15 calories.
Tomatoes are definitely superfoods! No argument on that!

What are superfoods? What so super about them?
Superfoods are food items which are very good sources of vitamins, minerals, fiber, phytonutrients, and antioxidants. These superfoods are said to prevent certain types of cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and other illnesses as well as promote overall well-being.
Walnuts are one of these superfoods. Walnuts are excellent sources of antioxidants including melatonin, ellagic acid, gamma-tocopherol, carotenoids, and polyphenolic compounds. They are also good sources of protein, dietary fiber, essential fatty acids and omega 3 fatty acids, folic acid, and zinc.
If this combination of nutrients doesn’t qualify walnuts as superfoods, I don’t what else!
Studies have revealed that walnuts can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease by 15% to 50% by eating seven shelled walnuts five times a week. That saves a lot of medical and hospital bills!
A study in Norway has found that walnuts are second to rose hips in terms of antioxidant activities. The superfoods walnuts contain a significant amount of omega 3 fatty acids when compared to other nuts like peanuts and macadamias. The FDA has even recommended walnuts for the health benefits they can provide.

You would’ve thought? Chocolate and a healthy diet don’t really go together in the same sentence before…but now they are!
But here’s the catch – eat dark chocolate – not milk or white chocolate.
And you can only eat as much as 100g of delicious dark chocolate. Remember, although it is good for you, dark chocolate is high in calories and if you’re planning to lose weight, then you have to eat it in moderation.
Dark chocolate has earned its status among the superfoods being an excellent source of potent antioxidants – phenols and flavonoids.
But wait, what are superfoods?
Superfoods are food items like your fruits and vegetables which can prevent certain types of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and the list goes on. Superfood are excellent sources of antioxidants, phytonutrients, fiber, minerals, and vitamins.
Dark chocolate being one of the superfoods certainly made life easier for a lot of people. Eating your favorite food (dark chocolate!) will give you many health benefits…isn’t that the best thing ever?
The antioxidants in dark chocolate has been known to lower blood pressure, keep your arteries clear by reducing the risk of blood clotting, and promote skin health.
Dark chocolate is bitter and that’s actually a good thing, meaning it has high antioxidant content. The darker the food item, the higher is the antioxidants it contains. Superfoods with dark colors like dark chocolate, blueberries and dark green leafy vegetables only indicate that they are rich in antioxidants.
Superfoods like dark chocolate are good for you but you should also keep in mind to eat just enough of them. Too much of a good thing can be bad…

Broccoli is one of the superfoods – superfoods are those which are excellent sources of antioxidants, phytonutrients, fiber, vitamins and minerals.
Broccoli is high in vitamin C, vitamin K, calcium, folate, and fiber. Broccoli also contains dithiolthiones, which trigger the synthesis of enzymes that may prevent carcinogens from damaging our DNA.
Studies have further secured the status of broccoli among the superfoods. A study at the University of Warwick has found that a compound known as sulforaphane. This compound has been found to “may help counter processes linked to the development of vascular disease in diabetes.”
Another study at the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, which highlighted research on dietary prevention of prostate cancer, has discovered that “”sulforaphane – a compound found in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, bok choy and brussels sprouts – has strong anti-cancer properties.”
Good thing you love broccoli, you will definitely benefit from all these good stuff broccoli can do for you! Broccoli deserves to be one of the superfoods, don’t you agree?
