The Ancient Wisdom Of Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy or water therapy is the use of water in rejuvenating, sustaining, and bringing back health. Hydrotherapy has been around for centuries, being an integral part of the cultures of the Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Chinese, Japanese, and Native Americans. In the 19th century, the benefits of hydrotherapy were rediscovered by a Bavarian monk, Sebastian Kneipp.
How does water therapy help? Warm water produces a vasodilation wherein blood is drawn to target tissues. There is an enhanced blood flow to these areas and oxygen and vital nutrients are transported effectively and this also helps in waste elimination in the cellular level. On the other hand, cold water generates vasoconstriction or contracting of the blood vessels which cause blood circulation to slow down, this in turn, reduces muscles spasms, swelling and pain.
Hydrotherapy helps people who are suffering from sciatica, arthritis, back design, rheumatism, aching joints, fatigue, circulation, insulation, stress, muscular pains, stiffness, tension, and cramps. However, you can also undergo water therapy even if you are not suffering from any of these conditions. Water therapy is a great way to relax and simply enjoy some quiet time to yourself for a change.
But wait; if you have a medical condition, it is always better that you seek advice from a health profession because certain medical conditions that can be worsened if you are suffering from a medical illness.

Review: Eat This, Not That

Review: Eat This, Not That
The Editor-in-Chief of Men’s Health David Zinczenko along with food and health editor Matt Goulding, came up with the new book “Eat This, Not That”. This book is not really a diet but more of a guide to making healthier choices when eating out or shopping.
Studies have shown that diet has a lot to do id you wan to lose unwanted pounds. And “Eat This, Not That” is a good nutritional guide to those who enjoy eating out. Menu of the famous and most common fast food and casual restaurants are broken down to the last calorie and you’ll be surprised how much your favorite dine-in order has!
It helps you make smarter choices when dining out and you will not be fooled by healthy-sounding meals. Did you know that a slice of a pan pizza from Pizza Hut has 650 calories? Not really a good choice, isn’t it?
It makes one controversial claim though. The authors claim that when following the recommendations of this book you will significantly reduce your waistline. However, most health and fitness experts disagree with this. Exercise and strength training will do this but on a diet alone, the possibility of losing those love handles is slim. You would lose weight but this would be cumulative and not body area-specific.
However don’t let this minor flaw stop you. There are so many benefits you can get when you have the information to help you decide which food choices are better and healthier.
Remember that the key to weight loss is cutting down on your calorie intake although making smarter fast food can certainly reduce your intake of calories; most of these foods are still high in calories. It would still help to cut down on calorie intake and practice portion control – and if you can help it, limit your eating out traditions as well.

Health Myths: Disproved By Doctors
Okay there are many health myths out there but I found this article which disproves seven of those myths. Doctors from the Indiana University School of Medicine conducted critical review on these myths using Medline and Google to find out if there is a shred of truth with these beliefs.
1. People should drink at least eight glasses of water a day
2. We use only 10% of our brains
3. Hair and fingernails continue to grow after death
4. Shaving hair causes it to grow back faster, darker, or coarser
5. Reading in dim light ruins your eyesight
6. Eating turkey makes people especially drowsy
7. Mobile phones create considerable electromagnetic interference in hospitals.
I bet you believed some of these, just like I did. I honesty try to drink eight glasses of water everyday but looks like it’s not really a requirement. Drink if you like not because you have to.
This certainly clears up some issues and dispels the fallacies that surround some medical and health beliefs. So let’s stop propagating these myths.

Probiotics: Bacteria In Your Food

Probiotics: Bacteria In Your Food
Eating, drinking, and snacking – these are very much our daily eating routine. What would your reaction be if I tell you to drink, and snack on microorganisms?
You’d be rightfully surprised, I’d imagine.
Bacteria in your food? We’ve trained to be as hygienic as possible in selecting goods at the local farmer’s market to the preparations of the foods we eat…and now, there’s this new trend of actually consuming foods which have bacteria in them?
Relax. You’re not going to munch on Salmonella or drink up E. coli. The microorganisms we’re talking about here are probiotics or the good bacteria.
What are probiotics?
As I said before, they are the good guys. Wikipedia defines probiotics as “dietary supplements and live microorganisms containing potentially beneficial bacteria or yeasts”.
The digestive tract has 400 species of naturally occurring bacteria. These microorganisms occur in symbiosis with your body. They carry out important processes in the digestive tract therefore it is important that a healthy balance between the good and bad bacteria is maintained.
Why are probiotics good for you?
There are now numerous studies which support the supplementation of probiotics.
One study on day care-aged children showed that consumption of probiotics-fortified lowered the rate of infections of the upper respiratory tract such as colds. There are also studies with children on antibiotics and are also taking probiotics at the same time; there was a reduction in the reports of diarrhea.
One study in adult has revealed that workers who took probiotics had less time off from work than those who didn’t.
Maintaining the Balance
Diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, and inflammatory bowel disease are the results of the imbalance between the good and bad bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. Good bacteria keep the pathogenic, disease-causing microorganisms from proliferating in the digestive track and once this delicate equilibrium is disrupted, common digestive problems occur.
Taking antibiotics which can kill good bacteria is one of the most common causes of problems of the digestive tract arise. Bad bacteria will begin to take over the normal microbiotic flora of the gastrointestinal system.
Benefits of Probiotics
A gastrointestinal specialist from Chicago’s Rush University, Dr. Sri Komanduri, recommends taking 450 billion live lactic acid bacteria (LAB) medical-strength probiotics supplements to keep the microbiotic balance stable. Here is a short list of the benefits you will obtain from consuming adequate probiotics. These will likely increase as more and more research are underway in this field of nutrition and medicine.
1. Reduced Cholesterol Levels – Laboratory studies on animals have demonstrated that a certain range of lactic acid bacteria are effective in lowering cholesterol levels in the blood.
2. Reduced Inflammation – Clinical studies have shown that lactic acid bacteria prevent recurrences of inflammatory bowel disease in adults to some degree.
3. Improved Immune Function – There has been evidence that probiotics may improve immune function by boosting the production of lymphocytes and phagocytes which are the front liners against infections. Probiotics, specifically lactic acid bacteria, are suggested to be “effective in the treatment and prevention of acute diarrhea, and in decreasing the severity and duration of rotavirus infections in children and travelers’ diarrhea in adults.”
4. Improved Mineral Absorption – Probiotics produce lactoferrin, a protein by-product of their metabolism, which in turn recover iron from the foods we eat. It is also suggested that certain strains of lactobacilli which can remedy various nutrient/mineral malabsorption problems.
5. Lactose Intolerance – Certain strains of lactic acid bacteria are added to certain foods to lessen the effects of lactose intolerance. Ingestion of LAB allows lactose intolerant individuals to accept more lactose in their system than they normally can.
However, be sure to check with your doctor if you are going to take probiotics supplements. There are also studies which suggest than intake of probiotics can have undesirable effects on your body, especially with critically ill patients. Throw caution to the winds and research the internet, ask around, and consult your doctor.
