Review: The Blood Type Diet
The Blood Type Diet has encountered strong opinions from medical doctors, health professionals, and qualified nutritionist/dieticians alike.
The creator of the diet, naturopath Peter D’Adamo states that weight loss diet should be based on our blood types. He supports this by the theory that the blood types evolved in different periods in human history so that the diet of a certain blood type should follow the diet of that specific period.
Type O is said to be the oldest of the blood types which evolved during the meat-gathering days of our ancestors. Individuals with type O blood type should have a large intake of meats and other protein-rich foods whereas type A is said to have developed during the agriculture-based period of human history. Blood type A individuals should therefore eat more fruits and vegetables.
This weight loss theory, however, is not supported by many health practitioners. Blood type has nothing to do with digestion, nutrient absorption or body chemistry.
There have been no supporting studies to back up the claims of the blood type diet. Clinical researches have not resulted in any evidence to support the theory; moreover, these researches have further disproved D’Adamo’s claims.
As for your weight loss program, the blood type diet can help you lose weight. Not for the reasons that you think though, but because of the fact that you eat less of some foods including meats, dairy products, bread and cereals.
The blood type diet will only be good to jumpstart your weight loss plan but staying on it permanently is a bad idea. You will miss out on some very important nutrients that your body need which is not want you really want to achieve. You’re seeking weight loss, not nutrient loss.
